Bony pile on State Game Land to be removed
HARRISBURG, July 2 – State Rep. Camille "Bud" George, D-74 of Clearfield County, said a Smokerun firm will reclaim at no cost to taxpayers a mine site in Gulich and Beccaria townships that was abandoned about 60 years ago.
CMT Energy Inc. will remove roughly 64,000 tons of coal refuse from State Game Land # 60 under a contract awarded by the Moshannon District Office of the state Department of Environmental Protection. The 9.5-acre mine site is located about a half mile northeast of the village of Beccaria along Muddy Run near the fish hatchery.
The work is valued at $45,000. No blasting or reprocessing will be allowed at the site.
According to the DEP, the C.E. Powell Coal Co. abandoned the site in the late 1940s.
