Clearfield Conservation District wins maximum $10,000 grant
HARRISBURG, Aug. 12 – State Rep. Camille "Bud" George, D-74 of Clearfield County, today said that the Clearfield County Conservation District has won approval of a $10,000 Environmental Education Grant.
"The grant is the maximum the state Department of Environmental Protection program may award under the program," Rep. George said "The money will be used to develop programs that will inform the public on abandoned mine drainage, remediation efforts and the economic benefits of restoring waterways."
Environmental fines assessed by the DEP pay for the grant program.
Rep. George noted that the area’s watersheds will benefit greatly with the recent decision to focus federal funding and state and private resources on mine-drainage pollution.
"The DEP is committing up to 30 percent of the estimated $1.4 billion it expects over the next 15 years to mine-drainage problems," Rep. George said. "It is a prudent use of federal Abandoned Mine Lands Fund, especially in Clearfield County where past mining practices have harmed so many water supplies."
In another matter, Rep. George said he has been named by House leadership to a two-year term on the Climate Change Advisory Committee, an 18-member panel responsible for compiling the potential impact of climate change on health, the economy, wildlife, agriculture and tourism.
