State accepting applications for Gulf War bonus program
HARRISBURG, April 8 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, announced that the state is now accepting applications for a new program that provides bonuses to veterans who served in the first Persian Gulf War in 1990-91.
The program will pay veterans $75 per month for each month they served in the war up to a maximum bonus of $525. The program will also pay $5,000 to prisoners of war during the Persian Gulf Conflict and to the families of troops who died during active service in the conflict.
To be eligible for a bonus, a veteran must have served on active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations between Aug. 2, 1990, and Aug. 31, 1991, and received the Southwest Asia Service Medal; been a legal resident of Pennsylvania during the time of service; and served under honorable conditions.
Surra said the bonus program was created by the General Assembly and approved by Pennsylvania voters in 2006. It is similar to other bonus programs the state has provided for veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Application deadline is Aug. 31, 2015. For detailed instructions on how to apply and for applications, veterans and their families should visit the following Web site: www.persiangulfbonus.state.pa.us. A link to that Web site is also provided at Surra’s legislative home page: www.pahouse.com/Surra.
