Surra announces $335,000 in grants for area conservation projects
HARRISBURG, April 14 – State Rep. Dan Surra announced today $335,000 in state grants that will benefit greenways, recreation and open space projects in Elk and Clearfield counties.
The projects were awarded grants through the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Community Conservation Partnerships Program. Funding for the grants comes from several sources, including the Growing Greener bond fund the General Assembly passed and state voters approved in 2005.
Surra said the grants include $15,000 for Fox Township to help fund a master site development plan for the expansion of the 20-acre Fox Township Community Park and the three-acre Main Street Park.
Elk and Clearfield counties will also benefit from a $100,000 grant that will fund a regional plan and county-specific plans for a North Central Greenways and Open Space project. The greenways and open space network would include parts of Elk, Clearfield, Cameron, Jefferson, McKean and Potter counties, and is being planned in conjunction with the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission.
Finally, Surra said portions of Clearfield County will benefit from a $220,000 grant being awarded to the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy for the purchase of land along the West Branch of the Susquehanna in the Pennsylvania Wilds region to allow for greenway, watershed and riparian protection projects in Clearfield, Center, Clinton and Lycoming counties.
The Community Conservation Partnerships Program is administered by DCNR’s Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. It provides grants and technical assistance to local governments, river and trail organizations, land trusts and other nonprofit groups to plan, acquire and develop parks, recreation areas, and conservation and greenways projects.
