Surra announces state grants for local sewage enforcement, recycling efforts

HARRISBURG, April 15 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, announced today that state grants approved by the Department of Environmental Protection will help two area municipalities fund sewage enforcement and recycling efforts at the local level.

Surra said a $17,495 grant will be awarded to Clearfield County to reimburse the county for half the cost of the county recycling coordinator’s salary and expenses. County recycling coordinators organize community collection efforts, analyze financial data for their respective programs, meet with companies to identify new recycling markets, and act as a liaison between the county and the state.

"The county recycling coordinator plays an important role in helping recycling programs become financially self sufficient," Surra said. "Having this dedicated person at the county level is essential to improving the performance of the recycling program, as well as keeping costs down and participation levels by residents up."

In addition, Surra said a $1,072 grant will be awarded to Spring Creek Township in Elk County to reimburse the township for half its costs of performing the sewage enforcement duties required by state law. The law requires municipalities to inspect and permit on-lot sewage systems to ensure they are working properly and are not a hazard to the environment or public health.

Both the recycling coordinator and sewage enforcement grant programs are administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
