Surra announces recycling coordinator grant for Elk County
HARRISBURG, June 11 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, announced today that Elk County will receive a $13,525 state grant to reimburse 50 percent of the county recycling coordinator's salary and expenses.
The grant was awarded through the Department of Environmental Protection's County Recycling Coordinator Grant Program.
Surra said county recycling coordinators serve as a link between DEP and municipal recycling and waste reduction programs. The coordinators compile annual waste and recycling reports, organize waste collections, create and update waste management plans, and offer a range of other recycling support activities to communities.
"Recycling coordinators are a very important part of the recycling process at the local and county level," Surra said. "A good recycling coordinator can make a huge difference in the success of local recycling efforts and in the amount of economic activity that recycling programs generate for local communities."
Surra said the county recycling coordinator reimbursement grants are funded by a $2-per-ton fee on materials deposited at municipal landfills and resource recovery facilities in Pennsylvania.
