Surra announces state grants for local recycling efforts

ST. MARYS, Aug. 22 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, announced today that state grants approved by the Department of Environmental Protection will help Ridgway Borough and Elk County with recycling efforts at the local level.

Ridgway will receive $2,357 and Elk County will receive $12,441 as part of the Recycling Performance Grant Program.

"These recycling performance grants are in addition to the state funds provided through the Department of Environmental Protection to our local municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs," Surra said. "This funding will not only help us with recycling efforts, but also serves as a boost for the local economy."

Surra said recycling has a significant environmental and economic impact in Elk and Clearfield counties and across the state. Recycling currently is a $23.4 billion industry in Pennsylvania. It generates about $18.4 billion in sales and $305 million in state taxes annually, and employs more than 81,000 people.

The Recycling Performance Grants Program provides an incentive to help Pennsylvania communities increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling and promote economic growth in the Commonwealth through job creation and market expansion.
