Surra announces recycling grant for St. Marys

HARRISBURG, Oct. 3 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, announced today that St. Marys has been awarded a recycling grant by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Surra said the grant to St. Marys is for $6,101, and is based on the city’s population and the amount of material recycled in St. Marys during the 2006 calendar year. During that year, city residents, businesses, schools and other organizations recycled a total of 680 tons of material.

The grants, which are funded by the state's Recycling Performance Grant Program, are designed as an incentive for counties and municipalities to continue improving their recycling programs and their rate of recycling. Recycling performance grants are awarded by DEP in addition to other funding for establishing and maintaining municipal recycling programs.

Surra said Pennsylvania’s recycling industry includes more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses and organizations that generate more than $18.4 billion in gross annual sales and provide jobs for more than 81,300 people. Recycling and reuse businesses in the state contribute more than $305 million in state revenues.

Pennsylvania recycling programs supply industry with more than 4.7 million tons of scrap commodities such as metals, paper, glass, plastics, wood, organics and other materials each year.
