Hanna: state budget keeps Pa. moving forward

HARRISBURG, July 4 – State Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Clinton/Centre, said the General Assembly today passed and sent to the governor a $28.2 billion budget that funds essential education, energy and economic development efforts in Pennsylvania without raising taxes.

"We’re in better shape than many other states that have had to make significant budget cuts and raise taxes this year because of the recession."

On education:

"The increased funding for basic education will allow school districts to improve their equipment and supplies to help students succeed academically.

"Supporting education is one of the most important things we do as legislators. It's an investment that pays for itself by giving the state skilled workers and helping them lead productive, successful lives.

"This budget does a lot for education. The increase in higher education for community colleges, Lock Haven and Penn State will help those schools invest in their students and keep tuition costs down."

On agriculture:

"Funding for Penn State Agricultural Extension was restored to previous levels. Local branches will be able to continue supporting agricultural education, programs and assistance in their communities."

On infrastructure:

"The funding for railroad improvements will allow businesses to transport their goods more easily and more economically. Many of our local businesses rely on rail transportation, and the improvements will help increase their productivity and bring economic growth to the area.

"Many communities are struggling with the huge costs associated with upgrading their sewer and water systems. The budget will help fund upgrades to protect public health."
