Hanna announces grant funding for local school districts

HARRISBURG, July 30 – State Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Clinton/Centre, announced that three school districts in his legislative district will receive Dual Enrollment grant funding to help students earn both high school and college credits simultaneously.

The school districts, which combined will receive more than $7,818, are: Bald Eagle Area, $1,326; and Bellefonte Area, $6,492. Both school districts are in Centre County.

"Dual Enrollment will help to prepare students for higher education upon their graduation from high school," Hanna said. "The program lets students get a feel for college courses and earn their high school degree at the same time."

The Dual Enrollment program enables high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college-level courses and receive postsecondary credit for coursework.

The grants for 2008-09 were awarded to 370 school districts and 16 career and technical schools in 64 Pennsylvania counties -- nearly three-fourths of the state's 501 school districts. The grants will give students access to nearly 50,000 college courses in the coming school year.
