Centre County communities receive state funding for recycling programs

STATE COLLEGE, Feb. 16 – State Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Centre, announced today that Centre County will be awarded more than $850,000 in state funding to help with various recycling programs throughout the region.

The grants and projects they will fund are as follows:

·         Centre County Solid Waste Authority -- $347,360 for the county's curbside recycling program and recycling center.

·         State College Borough -- $302,289 for yard and food waste recycling programs in the borough.

·         Patton Township -- $171,380 for the township's yard waste program.

·         Ferguson Township -- $38,220 for the township's yard waste program.

"This is valuable funding that comes to our communities through the state Department of Environmental Protection," Conklin said. "Recycling efforts are an important part of our environment as more and more reusable materials are made into new and different products."

Conklin said the grants were awarded through the state's Recycling Development and Implementation Grant Program, which provides grants to reimburse counties and municipalities for 90 percent of eligible recycling program development and implementation expenses. Projects such as curbside and drop-off recycling, multi-government initiatives and incentive-based efforts are eligible for funding under this grant program.
