More than $25K in grants awarded to State College Area SD

HARRISBURG, Aug. 12 – Centre County state Rep. Scott Conklin announced today that the State College Area School District will receive $25,480 in grants under the state's Environmental Education Grant Program.

A $15,000 grant will be used to review and revise the current curriculum and integrate it into the Schoolyard Program, which will help teachers and students better utilize outdoor classroom areas.

A $3,000 grant will be used to aid fifth-grade students in promoting and implementing an all-school composting program and garden.

A $7,480 grant will be used to present a series of in-service programs to middle school teachers designed to foster in-school awareness of the environment and ecology.

"I'm excited for our local schools to experience these new education programs," Conklin said. "The Environmental Education Act was created for just this purpose, and I'm thrilled our local schools will reap the benefits."

Conklin said the grants are a product of the Environmental Education Act of 1993, which requires 5 percent of the annual pollution fines and penalties collected by the state Department of Environmental Protection to be set aside for environmental education. The money is used to fund creative, hands-on lessons for students, teacher training programs and ecological education for residents.

Since the program's inception Conklin said, DEP has awarded more than $6 million in grants to support environmental education efforts throughout Pennsylvania.
