Belfanti announces tutoring grants for local school districts
HARRISBURG, Aug. 12 – State Rep. Robert E. Belfanti Jr. announced today that three school districts in his legislative district will receive state funding this school year to provide targeted tutoring services to students who need additional academic help.
Belfanti said the funding will come from the state's Educational Assistance Program, which was created by the legislature in 2003-04. The program was initially offered to 63 of the state's most academically challenged school districts, but has since been expanded to help students in 163 school districts and 12 career and technical schools.
Educational Assistance Program grants will be provided this year to:
Danville Area School District -- $104,163
Line Mountain School District -- $41,822
North Schuylkill School District -- $64,499
"While Pennsylvania schools have made steady progress in the past several years toward the academic goals set up by No Child Left Behind, the law calls for adequate progress by all students," Belfanti said. "This program, part of a renewed focus on providing more state funding for elementary and secondary education in Pennsylvania, is aimed at helping those students who need additional classroom instruction to make the academic progress necessary to graduate and succeed once they leave school."
Belfanti said this year's state budget includes $65.1 million for the Educational Assistance Program. The tutoring programs funded by EAP offer qualifying students additional instruction before and after school, and on weekends. The tutoring services are aligned with the state's academic standards and students' regular classroom curriculum.
