Kortz calls on House committee to take action on dog law,

stop inhumane treatment

HARRISBURG, Aug. 15 – Upon reading the report about the massacre of 80 dogs at a puppy mill in Berks County, state Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, is calling on the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee to take swift and immediate action on his legislation that would have prevented such a horrific act.

"I, like most Pennsylvanians, am sickened by this cowardly and cruel act," Kortz said. "To systematically shoot caged, defenseless dogs for no other reason than to save a few dollars is hard for all of us to comprehend. Unfortunately this is not the first time such a senseless and cruel massacre like this has happened in our state and sadly enough, because of Pennsylvania's current laws, this will not be the last.

"This cruel and cowardly act, and others like it that have happened in Pennsylvania in the past, is one of the main reasons I proposed House Bill 2417 this past spring, which is supported by the American Humane Association."

House Bill 2417 would prohibit the euthanizing of animals in Pennsylvania by no means other than a certified trained individual using an injection method. Currently this bill is sitting before the Agriculture Committee awaiting review.

"I strongly urge all of my constituents and every concerned citizen in the state of Pennsylvania to contact Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael K. Hanna and request that House Bill 2417 is brought before the committee for a vote," Kortz said. "To delay this bill any longer would only add to the anxiety and disgust felt by so many citizens all across this state and, for that matter, the entire United States."
