Thousands attend Waters' Village Family Reunion
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 15 – State Rep. Ronald G. Waters hosted his 2008 Village Family Reunion on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Frances Myers Recreation Center. In its second year at the center, the event went off without a hitch and was attended by thousands of people throughout the community.
"It was a very positive event," Waters said.
Free to the public, the Village Family Reunion featured workshops that offered money-saving advice and health screenings provided by Keystone Mercy. Rep. Waters’ legislative staff was available to address questions or concerns regarding state government.
The Fun-Zone for children featured swimming, pony rides, a trackless train, an obstacle course, moon bounces and arts and crafts and a separate area for seniors to create crafts as well. "The arts and crafts area was intergenerational," Waters said. "It became a place where our youth and senior citizens could share a fun experience and be creative together.
Waters also said that the musical performances were very well received by all ages. The main stage entertainment featured jazz, gospel, African-dance, rhythm and blues and Legendary hip hop artist, Doug E. Fresh, who portrayed the importance of family through his popular beat-boxing technique on stage while audience members sang along and cheered.
Another high-light of the event was the promotion of the Squash-It Campaign a forum initiated by Waters and the United Community Action Network, to end the personal conflicts that are the cause of a substantial amount of violence plaguing the city. The Squash-It Campaign gave out t-shirts to attendees who signed their name as a pledge to end their differences peacefully.
"All in all, the event was a success," Waters said. "My staff and I would like to thank the Philadelphia Department of Recreation and the Myers Recreation Center for allowing us to use their facility. I also want to thank the Philadelphia Police Department for their time and presence during at the event.
