Gibbons announces $15,000 grant awarded to Slippery Rock University

HARRISBURG, August 19 – State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-Lawrence/Beaver/Butler, announced that Slippery Rock University in Butler County has been awarded a $15,000 environmental education grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The grant will be used to develop a Web site that contains guides for creating outdoor learning sites for school and community properties.

"This grant is very important because it provides the opportunity for students to create a Web site that will ultimately benefit our schools and communities," Gibbons said. "It is important for students to understand the environment and their relationship with it."

To date, DEP has awarded more than $6 million in grants through the Environmental Education Grant Program. Money for the grants comes from 5 percent of the pollution fines and penalties collected by DEP, Gibbons said.

The program is open to school districts, private schools, nonprofit groups and county conservation districts to help them fund new or expanded environmental education programming.
