Sabatina successful in getting disciplinary school moved to alternate location
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 26 – State Rep. John Sabatina, D-Phila., said a meeting he called this week to discuss the proposed location of a school for disruptive students in the Rhawnhurst area ended successfully. Philadelphia School District officials and local elected officials, leaders of civic associations, ward leaders, town watch groups and other concerned citizens attended the meeting.
Camelot Schools Inc. and the district had proposed to move a 500-student disciplinary school to the grounds of the old Orleans Technical Institute. Following the meeting, the district decided to look for another location to house the school.
"The biggest problem we had with the plan is that the school district did not give any notice to elected officials or area residents of their plans to locate the school here. No one got the opportunity to ask questions or air their concerns," Sabatina said.
"Local residents should have a say in what is happening in their community."
Sabatina said elected officials will continue to be vigilant and work to avert any intrusion in the community deemed unsafe to local residents.
Concerned residents may contact Sabatina with questions or comments on the issue at 215-342-6204.
