Surra announces grant to fund underground tank cleanup in Sandy Township

HARRISBURG, Sept. 3 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, said a $4,000 state grant will help to fund cleanup of an underground heating oil storage tank in Sandy Township, Clearfield County.

The tank is owned by American Rock Salt Corp. of Retsof, N.Y.

Surra said the grant was awarded under the state's Underground Storage Tank Environmental Cleanup Program. The legislature voted last year to extend funding for this program, and another underground storage tank cleanup program, until 2012. The programs reimburse owners of small, underground storage tanks with less than 3,000 gallons capacity for the cost of cleaning up leaks or taking other corrective actions.

"These grant programs are important for preventing the release of dangerous chemicals into the soil or water supply," Surra said. "Without the state grant funding, small businesses and homeowners would face financial difficulties in getting spills cleaned up or bringing their storage tanks up to modern standards. The grants programs are a way to save costs for homeowners and businesses while making sure we protect the local environment."

The UST Environmental Cleanup Program includes $500,000 set aside specifically to help small business owners and homeowners pay for the cleanup of spills from underground tanks used to hold heating oil for use on the property. Another underground storage tank cleanup program, the Pollution Prevention Program, reimburses small businesses for the cost of plugging or removing unused or unsafe tanks that have not been updated to meet current state or federal requirements.

More information about the state's underground storage tank cleanup and grant programs is available at the Department of Environmental Protection's Web site: www.depweb.state.pa.us.
