PennFuture to host environmental meeting in Media
Vitali to be guest speaker, meeting is open to public
MEDIA, Sept. 4 – State Rep. Greg Vitali, D-Delaware, will be a guest speaker at a PennFuture town hall meeting, being held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Mansion Parlor and Community Center, 301 N. Jackson St. in Media, to discuss energy conservation legislation.
This is one of a group of public meetings that will be conducted across Pennsylvania by PennFuture to provide information about important environmental legislation pending in the state Senate. House Bill 2200 would provide energy conservation programs and tools such as smart meters and time of use electricity pricing plans that would reduce the demand and cost of energy.
"We need to let people know that the most important environmental bill of this term remains in the Senate awaiting action," Vitali said. "House Bill 2200 is needed not only to ease the inevitable utility rate increases, but also to combat global warming."
PPL Corp., Pennsylvania’s second-largest utility, has warned its customers to expect a 30 percent increase when its rate caps expire in 2010. PECO has estimated that electricity rates could increase as much as 26 percent for its customers when caps are lifted on Jan. 1, 2011.
"House Bill 2200 is needed to keep rate increases to a minimum," Vitali said. "The requirements of this legislation would take at least a year to get up and running. With the anticipated electricity price increases approaching, this legislation should be passed now. We don't have time to wait for the new legislative session to begin in January. Time is running out."
Speakers include Vitali, PennFuture President Jan Jarrett and Kevin Warren of Warren Energy Engineering.
