Surra announces local sewage enforcement grants
HARRISBURG, Sept. 8 – State Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk/Clearfield, announced the awarding of state sewage enforcement grants to several local municipalities today.
The grants will reimburse local governments 50 percent of the cost of performing sewage inspection and enforcement duties required by state law.
The grants amounts are as follows:
· Ridgway Township, Elk County -- $491
· Horton Township, Elk County -- $925
· Benezette Township, Elk County -- $2,172
· Highland Township, Elk County -- $667
Pennsylvania’s 1966 Sewage Facilities law requires local governments and agencies to administer a permitting and inspection program for the installation of on-lot septic systems. The grant program, administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, helps municipalities cover the cost of establishing uniform standards for these systems and preventing public health and environmental problems that can result from substandard or malfunctioning systems.
