Hazardous waste collection grants awarded

HARRISBURG, Sept. 28 – State Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Cambria, announced today that the state has awarded two grants totaling more than $13,000 for the safe collection and disposal of household hazardous waste in Cambria County.

Haluska said the grants were awarded under Pennsylvania's Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grant Program.

The first grant, for $10,122, will reimburse the Pennsylvania Resources Council Inc. for a household hazardous waste collection event held at Concurrent Technologies Corp. in Johnstown on May 21. The council hosts several of these events at locations across the state throughout the year, at which residents can dispose of common household chemicals such as aerosol cans, automotive fluids, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners and paint products for a nominal fee.

The second grant, in the amount of $2,972, was awarded to the Cambria County Solid Waste Authority for half its costs of operating regular household hazardous waste collection from January through June of this year.

Haluska said the county has information about how and where to properly dispose of household hazardous waste at its website, www.cambriarecycles.org.

The state's Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grant Program was established in 1996 to provide state funding to counties, municipalities, and even corporations and trade associations to establish and maintain household hazardous waste collection programs.
