DePasquale to host economic development and jobs hearing in York

Harrisburg, York, Lancaster and Reading mayors to testify

HARRISBURG, Jan. 4 – State Rep. Eugene DePasquale, D-York, today said an array of public officials, business leaders and planning experts will testify at an upcoming House Majority Policy Committee public hearing he will co-chair in York to discuss economic development in third-class cities.

The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 in the White Rose Room at the Sovereign Bank Stadium, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York.

The newly-installed mayor of York, Kim Bracey, will testify, as will Harrisburg's new mayor, Linda Thompson. Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray and Reading Mayor Tom McMahon, who is also the 2nd Vice-President of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities, also will testify.

Others scheduled to speak include Felicia Dell, director, York County Planning Commission; Judith Schwank, president & CEO, 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania; Eric Menzer, senior vice president, Wagman Construction Company, York; Tom Donely, president, York County Chamber of Commerce; and Darrell Auterson, president and CEO of the York County Economic Development Corporation.

.

DePasquale will co-chair the hearing with Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster.

"I am looking forward to tackling in a comprehensive way how best we can have more family sustaining jobs in York and other third-class cities," DePasquale said. "The national recession has had a tremendous impact locally. As we begin to climb our way out, we need to make sure we have a solid strategy for job creation in place. We're keeping Harley Davidson in York and nationally there are signs that the economy is beginning to recover. However, we need to do the best job possible to ensure that when the recovery finally begins to have job growth accompany it, that our third-class cities like York, Lancaster, Reading and Harrisburg are not left out."

"The hearing will also attack the issue of job creation from several points of view to ensure we get the best advice possible. I'm particularly glad that our new mayor of York, Kim Bracey, and the new Harrisburg mayor, Linda Thompson, will be speaking just days after taking office. It is critical that we have strong state and local government partnerships along with public and private partnerships to ensure we are all working together to improve strategies to help businesses and get more citizens back to work," he said.

No RSVPs are required for this free public hearing. More information on the hearing is available by calling DePasquale's office at 717-848-9595.
