LIHEAP program grants increased, extended

HARRISBURG, Jan. 6 – State Rep. Eugene DePasquale, D-York, today announced that Pennsylvania's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, will increase cash grant amounts by $100 and extend the program through April 2.

"I commend Governor Rendell for acting swiftly for in-need Pennsylvanians," DePasquale said. "This has already fared to be a bitter winter, and the LIHEAP program is a much-needed relief to York residents who have trouble heating their homes in this economy."

The federally funded LIHEAP helps income-eligible households pay for heat during the winter months and is administered by the state Department of Public Welfare. A family of four with an annual income of up to $33,075 can qualify for this assistance.

DePasquale said LIHEAP's closing date has been extended from March 15 to April 2. He added that, according to the Public Welfare Department, cash grants for this winter are expected to average $326.

DePasquale said people can learn more about LIHEAP by calling his local constituent service office at 848-9595. Applications are also available through the York County Assistance Office by calling 1-800-991-0929, or by visiting www.compass.state.pa.us.
