DePasquale visits with St. Patrick's Catholic school students

Lawmaker responds to letters written by students regarding busing issues

YORK, Feb. 22 – In response to letters written by several students, state Rep. Eugene DePasquale, D-York, visited St. Patrick's School last week to talk about issues important to the students and their communities.

DePasquale said several students from St. Patrick's wrote letters to him expressing the need to maintain public transportation opportunities for private school students. He said he wanted to meet with them in person to talk about the issue and to show that government officials are accessible.

"The students read newspapers articles in the York papers about the transportation and busing issues that many private school students are facing in York," DePasquale said. "They took the initiative and wrote me letters voicing their concerns and informed me on how important this issue was to them. I wanted to meet with them and talk to these young people to show them that this is how government should work -- citizens contacting their local representatives and receiving action and answers."

DePasquale said along with the transportation and busing issue, he had the opportunity to talk with the students about other state and national events and issues.

"I was very impressed with the amount of interest and knowledge these students had regarding local, state and national issues," he said. "These are fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, and they were engaged in the conversation. It was a fun learning experience and I am thankful for the opportunity to have spent time with these students."
