DePasquale to host Property Tax/Rent Rebate workshops

HARRISBURG, Nov. 7 – State Rep. Eugene DePasquale, D-York, today announced he will host a series of workshops to help residents with their Property Tax/Rent Rebate applications.

The workshops will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the following days:

·         Nov. 18 – West York Borough Building, 1700 W. Philadelphia St., York

·         Nov. 19 – North York Borough Building, 350 E. Sixth Ave., York

·         Nov. 20 – Spring Garden Township, 340 Tri Hill Road, York

DePasquale said that those who may be eligible should bring the following information with them to the workshop they attend: Photo ID, 2007 tax forms, 2007 Social Security award letter, IRA paperwork, stock/dividend paperwork, paid property tax receipt (stamped "PAID"), paid school tax receipt (stamped "PAID"), pension paperwork, annuity paperwork, rent receipts, bank account routing number and checking or savings account number (if the check should be deposited directly into a bank account).

The program provides rebates on the previous year's property taxes or rent for income-eligible senior citizens who are 65 or older, widows or widowers 50 or older, or residents 18 or older with a permanent disability.

For homeowners seeking a property tax rebate, the household income limit is $35,000; for renters, the income limit is $15,000. Applicants should count only half of any Social Security or federal railroad retirement Tier I benefits toward their income when applying.

The maximum rebate for both homeowners and renters is $650. However, this year many senior citizens may receive an even larger rebate. Senior citizen homeowners who are eligible for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program and whose income is less than $30,000 will receive an additional 50 percent rebate if the property taxes they paid in 2007 were at least 15 percent of their income. These seniors may qualify for a property tax rebate of up to $975. This extra calculation automatically will be added by the Department of Revenue during application processing.

The deadline for the state's Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is Dec. 31, 2008.
