House Democratic and Republican Policy committees

hold briefing on 2010 U.S. Census

HARRISBURG, Jan. 4 – The House Democratic and Republican Policy committees, led by Chairmen Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, and Stan Saylor, R-York, respectively, held a joint public briefing at the state Capitol Monday to examine the process and details of the 2010 United States Census.

Two U.S. Census officials, Philip Lutz, assistant regional census manager; and Ben Ramos, partnership coordinator, provided testimony at the briefing.

"The U.S. Census is a huge undertaking with huge implications for states like Pennsylvania," Sturla said. "It was interesting to learn the details of how it is managed, as well as the far-reaching results determined by its final product, like reapportionment. I was glad the two Policy committees were able to offer this briefing jointly for the public to learn more about the Census."

Saylor added, "The information collected during the U.S. Census will have a major impact on our Commonwealth. Everything from how many seats Pennsylvania occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives to determining our share of billions of dollars in federal funding is impacted by the Census. I am pleased we were able to work in a bipartisan way to provide this important briefing to our constituents."

Also at the briefing, state Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., said "As chair of the State Government Committee, I will actively monitor the way the 2010 Census is conducted across the Commonwealth. The importance of the Census requires us to ensure it is performed with oversight and diligence."
