Majority Policy Committee looks at economic development and job creation
YORK, Jan. 14 – House Majority Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, said today that the committee held a hearing Thursday to examine the issue of economic development and job creation in third-class cities.
The hearing was held at the request of local lawmaker state Rep. Eugene DePasquale, D-York,
"As our federal, state and local communities recover from the recession, it is more important than ever to consider all the options as far as economic development to determine what works and what doesn't work," Sturla said. "Representative DePasquale was on the mark spearheading this hearing, especially bringing in the new leaders who will be tasked with navigating their cities into prosperity."
DePasquale said, "It is critical that when we look at economic recovery in Pennsylvania's third-class cities, including York, Harrisburg, Reading and Lancaster, that the jobs we create are good and family-sustaining. It is crucial that we examine the economic development opportunities and make well-thought-out strategic plans."
Those testifying at the hearing included mayors Kim Bracey, York; Thomas McMahon, Reading; Linda Thompson, Harrisburg; and Rick Gray, Lancaster; as well as Felicia Dell, director of the York County Planning Commission; Darrell Auterson, president and CEO of the York County Economic Development Corp.; Tom Donley, president of the York County Chamber of Commerce; Eric Menzer, senior vice president of Wagman Construction; and Ed Wilson, acting president and CEO of 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania.
