House adopts Sturla-Boyd resolution declaring Thaddeus Stevens Day
HARRISBURG, April 1 – The state House unanimously adopted a resolution (H.R. 576) today introduced by state Reps. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, and Scott Boyd, R-Lancaster, that declares April 4, 2008, as Thaddeus Stevens Day in Pennsylvania.
"As we celebrate Thaddeus Stevens’ 216th birthday this week, I am proud that the House once again honored this historical public servant who accomplished so much for Pennsylvania and the United States. Lancaster was fortunate to be his home for the last 26 years of his life," Sturla said.
Boyd added, "Thaddeus Stevens left a remarkable legacy in our area that all of us can admire. His legislative successes in public education, emancipation and reconstruction helped make our Commonwealth and country a better place."
Thaddeus Stevens was born on April 4, 1792, in Vermont. Stevens was a member of the state House from 1833 to 1842. He served in the U.S. House from 1849 to 1853, and again from 1859 until his death in 1868. He is buried in Lancaster’s Shreiner-Concord Cemetery.
Stevens left a generous bequest upon his death to establish a school for the relief and refuge of homeless and indigent orphans. This school evolved to form the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
