Majority Policy Committee looks at single payer health-care system

PHILADELPHIA, April 17 – The House Majority Policy Committee held a public hearing today at the University of Pennsylvania to hear testimony about a single payer health-care system, according to committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster.

"Health care is a major priority of the House Democrats," Sturla said. "As we look to make health care more affordable and accessible to Pennsylvanians, it is important that we consider all options. Today’s hearing enabled the committee to get a sense of how a single payer health-care system would operate in our Commonwealth."

Those testifying included Walter Tsou, M.D., former Philadelphia health commissioner; Chuck Pennacchio, executive director, HealthCare4ALLPA; Sam Marshall, president and CEO, Pennsylvania Insurance Federation; Patricia Eakin, president, Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals; William George, president, Pennsylvania AFL-CIO; Scott Crane, chairman, Pennsylvania Association of Health Underwriters Legislative Committee; William McCool, director, Midwifery Graduate Program, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing; and Lindsay Kaldor, student, Temple University School of Medicine.

"I know House Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Frank Oliver and House Insurance Committee Chairman Tony DeLuca will continue their sound work on health care issues," Sturla said.
