Democratic Policy Committee explores outcomes of education cuts in 2011/12 state budget

LANCASTER, July 12 The House Democratic Policy Committee today held a public hearing at J.P. McCaskey High School to hear about ways Pennsylvania's schools and colleges are dealing with the cuts to education funding in this year's state budget approved last month, said Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster.

"Like communities across Pennsylvania, Lancaster is feeling the squeeze brought on by the Republicans' intense cuts to education and services funding in the recently approved state budget," Sturla said. "The experts testifying today were able to provide the committee with insight of how they are making due with less at a critical time in our state's economic recovery."

Those testifying at the hearing included: Pedro Rivera, superintendent, School District of Lancaster; Baruch Kintisch, director of policy advocacy, Education Law Center; Dr. James McCollum, executive deputy to the president and chief of staff, Millersville University; and Ron Cowell, president, The Education and Policy Leadership Center.
