Democratic Policy Committee to hold public hearing
on palliative care Tuesday in Philadelphia
HARRISBURG, Aug. 25 – House Democratic Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, announced today that the committee will hold a public hearing regarding the availability and uses of palliative care from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 in the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Josephs Stokes Auditorium, first floor, 34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia.
State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, requested the hearing and will serve as co-chairman. Frankel plans to soon introduce legislation that would create greater access to pain management and palliative care for all individuals, but particularly young people.
The current hearing agenda is:
· 10 a.m. – Welcome and opening remarks
· 10:10 a.m. – Panel of parents
Ø Kate Lawson, bereaved parent
Ø Stacy Gerlach, parent of a child with chronic illness
· 10:50 a.m. – Panel of physicians
Ø Dr. David Casarett, chief medical officer, University of Pennsylvania Hospice and Palliative Home Care Service
Ø Dr. Chris Feudtner, director of research of pediatric advanced care team, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
· 11:50 a.m. – Trish Benton, hospice social worker/bereavement counselor, Hospice of Lancaster
· 12:20 p.m. – Closing remarks
