Murphy: LIHEAP program extended, cash grants increased
HARRISBURG, Jan. 6 – State Rep. Kevin Murphy announced that Pennsylvania's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, will increase cash grant amounts by $100 and extend the program through April 2 because more money is available than expected and the state has managed the program efficiently.
"This is good news in what has been a bitterly cold winter," said Murphy, D-Lackawanna. "These changes will provide help for more people who need it. That's important during these difficult economic times."
Cash grants help families pay their regular heating bills. The grant typically is sent directly to a utility company or fuel provider, and is credited on a recipient's bill. LIHEAP also offers crisis grants to help with emergency heating situations, such as a fuel shortage, utility service termination, a broken furnace or leaking lines.
Applications are available at county assistance offices, local utility companies and community service agencies, such as Area Agencies on Aging or community action agencies. The Lackawanna County Assistance Office operates LIHEAP in Lackawanna County. Phone 570-963-4842 for cash grants and 570-963-6836 for crisis grants.
