Wansacz votes to approve 2008-09 state budget

HARRISBURG, July 4 – State Rep. Jim Wansacz said that he is pleased with the priorities outlined in the 2008-09 state budget that passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today and he had the following to say on these topics:

Education

"Local school districts are going to receive basic education funding increases of between 3 and 9 percent in this year's budget. We're also funding vital programs like Pre-K Counts and Classrooms for the Future to prepare Pennsylvania students for success," Wansacz said. "Pennsylvania's future depends on the achievements of our youngest residents. It's satisfying to know that we are making the necessary investments in our students now so that they will be leaders in the state years from now."

Energy

"The state budget makes significant investments in energy initiatives that will not only reduce our reliance on foreign oil and spur economic development, but will make Pennsylvania a leader in the biofuel and renewable energy industries," Wansacz said. "I look forward to watching Pennsylvania grow and succeed as a leader on this front."

Flood Mitigation

"I'm thrilled that flood control projects are accounted for in the budget," Wansacz said. "With my legislation (H.B. 1989), I was aiming for a dedicated resource to fund flood mitigation projects and aid with cleanups in the wake of small-scale flooding. I will continue to work toward that goal."

Wansacz also noted that he looks forward to working on additional priorities, such as passing health-care legislation and legalizing table games in the state's casinos, in the upcoming months.
