Eachus: Property Tax/Rent Rebate program returning $216,000 to nearly 500 seniors in the Greater Hazleton Area
HAZLETON, July 2 – State Rep. Todd Eachus said the state has begun sending refund checks to 491 area seniors who applied and were approved for a Property Tax/Rent Rebate last year, and that applications for this year’s program are available at his Hazleton office, located at 100 W. Broad St.
Homeowners and renters who think they or a loved one may be eligible should call Eachus’ office at 570-450-7905 to set up an appointment for help.
"I fought hard to expand this program and I want every eligible senior in the Greater Hazleton Area to apply," Eachus said. "I’m very proud and happy to see so many real dollars put back in the hands of the people who need them the most, but my staff and I won’t be satisfied until everyone who deserves this rebate gets this rebate."
"My staff is ready to give you the help you need, so please call and schedule an appointment today. We had 61 first-time rebate filers last year, and I want to see that number get bigger."
Rebates totaling $215,688 are currently being sent to 491 applicants in the 116th Legislative District, with 305 rebates totaling $117,085 going to homeowners and 185 rebates totaling $98,603 going to renters.
To qualify, homeowners must have a household income of $35,000 per year or less and renters $15,000 per year or less. Homeowners and renters must also be 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or 18 or older and permanently disabled. As always, only half of an applicant’s Social Security or federal Railroad Retirement income is counted against the income limit. Rebates of up to $650 are available to those who qualify, based on income and taxes or rent paid. The deadline to file for a rebate was recently extended to Dec. 31.
Eachus will be hosting Property Tax/Rent Rebate sign-up days in Conyngham, Butler Township, Sugarloaf, Hazle Township and Freeland in upcoming weeks to help encourage more people to find out if they or a loved one qualify.
