Carroll announces $258,244 in grants for local volunteer fire companies and EMS
HUGHESTOWN, Feb. 14 -- State Rep. Mike Carroll, D-Luzerne/Monroe, announced that the following fire, ambulance and rescue organizations in Luzerne County have been awarded grants totaling $258,244 through the state’s Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program.
Last year, the General Assembly passed legislation, Act 10 of 2007, renewing the grant program until 2012. Grants of up to $30,000 for fire companies and $20,000 for ambulance companies were made available for this past round of funding. The program will continue to provide $15,000 and $10,000 grants for the next five years until the program comes up for reauthorization. The following local organizations received grants:

Jenkins Township Volunteer Hose Company - $19,000

“Fundraisers and grants aren’t only a necessity for volunteer emergency services to survive -- they’re essential to protecting our families, homes and businesses during emergencies,” Carroll said.
Under the Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program, eligible volunteer fire and rescue companies may receive grants ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 to help pay for construction or renovation of the company’s primary structure, purchase or repair of equipment, training and certification or debt reduction. Volunteer ambulance companies can receive grant funding ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. Volunteer fire companies that also provide volunteer ambulance service are eligible to apply for both grants.
