RE: Re-register for Do Not Call list to prevent unwanted phone calls
For most of us, there’s nothing more annoying than getting those phone calls from telemarketers on a daily basis. We rush to answer the phone, thinking it’s a friend or family member, or listen to it ring off the hook while we’re trying to eat dinner. The good thing is that there’s a way to keep these irksome phone calls from interrupting your life.
It’s called the Do Not Call list. Some of you already know about this program and have taken advantage of it. For those of you who don’t: The state’s Do Not Call law, enacted in 2002, allows you to register your phone numbers on the Do Not Call list for five years to avoid getting calls from telemarketers. The law applies to both residential land lines and wireless phones.
If you previously registered with the state’s Do Not Call list, your registration may expire soon. If your phone number was first listed in 2002, it must be re-registered by Sept. 15, 2007, or the protection will expire and you will be dropped from the list on Nov. 1, 2007.
You may register or re-register for Do Not Call by calling toll-free 1-888-777-3406 or visiting www.nocallsplease.com online.
Registration is free, and nothing more than your name, address, and phone number needs to be provided. If you register before Sept. 15, telemarketers will not call you after Nov. 1. If you miss the Sept. 15 registration deadline, you can register before Dec. 15 and telemarketers will stop calling you on Feb. 1, 2008.
If you move, you can register your new phone number and you can also update your address by re-registering even if you kept your old phone number.
There are some exceptions to the Do Not Call list: Calls that you request, calls made by companies to with which a customer already has a business relationship, debt collection calls, calls from tax-exempt charitable or fraternal organizations, calls from veterans organizations, and calls made on behalf of political groups or candidates are all exempt from the Do Not Call list.
Hopefully, this information will help you avoid getting unwanted phone calls from telemarketers. If you need assistance or have questions about the Do Not Call list, you may contact my Gilbert office at 610-681-2940 or my Hughestown office at 570-655-4883.
