Luzerne County legislators announce $51,496 local tourism grant

HARRISBURG, Jan. 23 – State Reps. John Yudichak, Phyllis Mundy, Eddie Pashinski and Mike Carroll, all D-Luzerne, announced that the Luzerne County Convention and Visitors Bureau will receive $51,496 in state tourism funding.

“More people are becoming aware of the variety of things there are to do and see in the region,” Yudichak said. “The grant funding will help us continue to promote Luzerne County as a great place to visit.”

“Our area welcomes visitors from all states, young and old, to enjoy the activities we have to offer in northeastern Pennsylvania,” Pashinski said.

The Luzerne County bureau is one of 49 agencies that received aid statewide through a $10.6 million appropriation for state tourism agencies to develop promotional materials, advertisements and other marketing activities to increase tourism in Pennsylvania.

“Pennsylvania is a beautiful state rich with history and diversity,” Mundy said. “This grant will help bring more people to our corner and position us to grow economically.”

Pennsylvania is the fifth-most-visited state in the country, with an estimated 138 million visitors annually. Travelers to Pennsylvania spent about $27 billion in 2006, including nearly $19.1 billion by leisure visitors on transportation, food, hotel rooms, shopping, entertainment and other items.

“Statewide, more than 500,000 jobs exist because of the tourism industry,” Carroll said. “With these state grants, we can continue to attract more travelers to our area.”
