Yudichak helps Hanover Township get equipment to reduce speeding

HARRISBURG, April 25 – State Rep. John Yudichak, D-Luzerne, recently helped obtain speed minders for Hanover Township.

Yudichak coordinated a meeting between Hanover Township and state Department of Transportation District 4 officials. The meeting produced an agreement that will provide the township with speed minders for May and September at Middle Road, the Carey Avenue Bridge, Ashley Street by Hanover High School and Main Road near Hanover Township Elementary School.

Yudichak said speeding has consistently been a problem in these areas.

"Slowing down saves lives," Yudichak said. "This equipment will help protect local residents, especially our school students."

He said because speed minders are in such high demand by communities, it is difficult to get one. The District 4 PennDOT office has only four devices available and has to limit the amount of time each community can use them.

Speed minders electronically identify and display the speed of oncoming vehicles to help encourage safe driving and slow down traffic to the posted speed limit. They are usually located near school zones, parks, churches or other locations where traffic consistently exceeds the speed limit. According to Radarsign LLC, they have been proven effective in reducing motorist speeds by 8 percent to 15 percent typically, and have boosted compliance with posted speed limits by 30 percent to 60 percent.
