Local lawmakers meet to address Route 309 traffic danger

HARRISBURG, May 11 – State Reps. John Yudichak and Eddie Day Pashinski, both D-Luzerne, and state Sens. Raphael Musto, D-14th District, and Lisa Baker, R-20th District, announced that they plan to meet with officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation this week to discuss the dangerous stretch of Route 309 that was the scene of a fatal accident Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, a motorist was stopped on Route 309 in Ashley waiting to make a left turn into a local restaurant when his vehicle was hit from behind by another vehicle. The motorist's vehicle caught on fire and witnesses were unable to free him.

"Motorists who are stopped along that stretch of the highway waiting to turn left are in serious danger," Yudichak said. "Other drivers coming around the curve have no warning that someone up ahead may be stopped. PennDOT needs to address this situation before any more lives are lost."

"Serious accidents have been a problem on this dangerous stretch of Route 309 for quite a while," Pashinski said. "We need to rectify this traffic pattern problem so that more lives are not lost."

Both Yudichak and Pashinski said the proposed meeting this week is in response to constituent calls and e-mails requesting that action be taken to make this stretch of Route 309 safer.
