Yudichak: Local water and sewer systems consolidation bill passes House
HARRISBURG, July 4 – State Rep. John Yudichak, D-Luzerne, said the House recently passed legislation he supported (S.B. 1341) that would authorize voters to approve a $400 million bond for water supply and sewage treatment systems through the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority.
Yudichak said one amendment to the bill would be of particular benefit to Luzerne County. The amendment would provide funding for two or more municipalities to consolidate their water supply, sewage disposal and storm water systems.
"This bill would benefit municipalities who want to upgrade their systems but can’t because of the hefty price tag," Yudichak said.
"Communities like Plymouth Township and Bear Creek Township have been mandated by DEP to install new sewer systems, but both communities have very limited resources to complete the job," Yudichak said. "The new state funding and the spirit of municipal cooperation, encouraged by the legislation, could significantly reduce the cost of major infrastructure projects like those faced by local Luzerne County communities."
The bill now goes back to the state Senate for concurrence on several amendments.
