Luzerne County schools to receive science education grants

HARRISBURG, July 24 – State Rep. John Yudichak, D-Luzerne, announced that Rice Elementary School and Hanover Area Memorial Elementary School will receive grants as part of the "Science: It's Elementary" program.

Science: It’s Elementary allows school districts to invest in programs and technology that have been proven to help children succeed in elementary science classes. It provides science kits for hands-on experiments on the weather, water, balance and motion, electricity, and rocks and minerals.

"Science: It's Elementary is a great program to promote science within our schools," Yudichak said. "It allows students to become proactive in their science curriculum and learn from hands-on experience."

The program was originally funded by the General Assembly two years ago. Yudichak said this year's state budget included $14.5 million to expand the program to include 14 additional schools and 8,242 new students. With the new funding, Science: It's Elementary will now be operating in 143 elementary schools, reaching more than 2,800 teachers and nearly 67,000 Pennsylvania elementary school students.
