Mundy lauds local Girl Scout’s dedication to community

KINGSTON, Feb. 28 – State Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Luzerne, presented Girl Scout Katelyn Confer with a House of Representatives citation in recognition of her Girl Scout Gold Award achievement, the highest honor a scout can receive in the organization.

Mundy said in order to receive the award, Confer had to complete a final project and chose to construct a craft tent for children at the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction.

“One of the tenets of Girl Scouting is to leave communities in better shape than when you found them,” Mundy said. “Miss Confer has most certainly achieved that goal. It is so important for young people to be involved in their communities and Katelyn has set a wonderful example for her peers.”

Mundy said that to be eligible for the Gold Award, a Senior scout must show excellence in herself, her community and her future. Scouts must also complete career explorations, demonstrate leadership skills, perform community service and complete specialized interest projects.

Confer, a Shavertown native, is a member of Troop 2654 and previously received the Girl Scout Silver Award, the second highest award in the organization. She is a junior at Dallas High School and is active in various school activities such as SADD, student government, field hockey and Teacher for Tomorrow. Her parents are Michael and Patricia Confer.
