House adopts Mundy's resolution to address projected phone number shortages

HARRISBURG, March 17 – State Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Luzerne, today announced that the full House of Representatives has unanimously adopted a resolution she authored to address projected telephone number shortages in the 570, 814 and 717 area code calling regions.

"New technologies and increased consumer demand for telephone, Internet and wireless services have strained the Commonwealth's telephone number resources," Mundy said. "As a result, we will face shortages when those area codes begin to run out of numbers next year."

House Resolution 606 asks the Federal Communications Commission to expeditiously approve the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s 2009 petition to implement mandatory number pooling. This conservation method would extend the life of the 570, 814 and 717 area codes by better managing and maximizing the available phone numbers.

"This resolution recognizes that the PUC is in the best position to make area code relief policy decisions due to their inherent understanding of the state's geography, as well as consumer concerns," Mundy said. "I am pleased my colleagues adopted the resolution in support of the PUC's petition, which will minimize the impact of adding an additional area code on individuals and businesses."
