Multiple Sclerosis Society names Mundy Outstanding Legislator of the Year

HARRISBURG, Oct. 30 – On Wednesday, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society presented state Rep. Phyllis Mundy, chairman of the House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee, with its Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award.

The award was given in recognition of Mundy’s advocacy on behalf of Pennsylvania’s aging population and her work in securing passage of legislation regulating assisted living in the Commonwealth. Assisted living allows those with multiple sclerosis and other disabilities, including senior citizens, to age in place in a home-like setting.

This session, Mundy reintroduced legislation (H.B. 245) to expand the Pennsylvania Family Caregiver Support Program, which provides financial assistance for those caring for older relatives at home. The bill would remove the relationship and residency requirements by allowing friends and neighbors to qualify, as well as increase the reimbursement and grant limits. These changes would mirror the rules already in place for the federal program. The bill awaits consideration by the state Senate.

The MS Society also lauded Mundy for her leadership in ensuring that proper safeguards are in place to protect older adults and those with disabilities from abuse and neglect.

Mundy was first elected to the House in 1990 and is currently serving her second term as chairman of the House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee. She represents the 120th Legislative District in Luzerne County.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society champions the needs of the approximately 400,000 Americans living with MS through comprehensive support services and educational programs, advocacy, and the funding of cutting-edge research.
