Pashinski: State grants available to fix leaking underground oil tanks

WILKES-BARRE, April 2 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, announced that a state grant program is available in Luzerne County to help owners of leaking underground heating oil tanks pay for corrective measures.

Pashinski said the funding is made available through the Department of Environmental Protection's Underground Heating Oil Tank Cleanup Reimbursement Grant Program. It covers tanks that have experienced a leak anytime since Jan. 30, 1998.

"Homeowners and small business owners can be financially saddled with the cost of cleaning up leaking underground heating oil tanks. This grant program eases some of that cleanup cost," Pashinski said.

The Luzerne County lawmaker said  tanks must have a capacity of 3,000 gallons or less and be used to store heating oil that is consumed where it is stored. The grant program covers the actual cost of the cleanup or $4,000, whichever is less. A $1,000 deductible must first be paid by the tank owner.

According to DEP, costs associated with removing underground storage tanks that have not leaked, or repairing above-ground heating oil tanks, including those located in basements or cellars, are not eligible for reimbursement through the grant program.

More information about the Underground Heating Oil Tank Cleanup Reimbursement Grant Program is available online at www.depweb.state.pa.us keyword: storage tank cleanup, or by e-mailing tankcleanup@state.pa.us.
