Pashinski spearheads new law to allow land revitalization in Luzerne County

HARRISBURG, July 16 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, said Gov. Ed Rendell has signed legislation into law that will allow the Coal Street Park project in Wilkes-Barre to move forward.

The law switches recreational land use restrictions from 2.43 acres within the Wilkes-Barre park to another 2.43 acres of land within the park to facilitate the redevelopment project.

Pashinski said the $13.7 million project will completely renovate the former ice-a-rama within the Coal Street Recreational Complex. A new two-story facility that will include a hockey rink, athletic training area, retail space and the main headquarters and practice facility for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins ice hockey team. The project also will include lighted basketball, baseball and soccer fields and practice areas and adequate parking.

Pashinski said the legislation (Act 16 of 2009) was amended in the Senate to include his language allowing the project to move forward. He thanked state Sen. Raphael Musto, D Carbon/Luzerne/Monroe, for helping with successful passage in the Senate.
