McCall: Carbon County firm to receive $224,000 recycling grant
HARRISBURG, April 7 – State Rep. Keith McCall said that Palmerton’s Alliance Sand Operation will receive a $224,000 grant under the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Markets Infrastructure Development Grant Program intended to assist state businesses with recycling efforts.
"Our state, as well as our region, is a national leader in recycling thanks to innovative community-minded businesses like Alliance Sand," McCall said. "Recycling has put more than 80,000 people to work while helping our companies and communities save energy, reduce pollution and conserve natural resources, and I’m glad to do what I can to help area companies who are investing in the future."
Alliance plans to use this $224,000 grant to buy glass-crushing equipment that will allow them to recycle 500 tons of mixed-colored, post-consumer glass bottles per year. By switching to sand made from recycled glass instead of quarried rocks, as the company had used previously, Alliance Sand will reduce the impact of surface mining on the local community.
"There is a local need for recycling glass in Carbon and Monroe counties," Alliance Sand President Alan Siberini said. "This grant will allow our company to operate even more efficiently and, in years to come, offer local residents a full-service recycling center. I’ve been involved in this business for over ten years, and I believe it’s a matter of educating residents about recycling to illustrate its cost-effectiveness."
The grant program aims to build strong markets and provide reimbursement of machinery or equipment costs associated with recycled materials by assisting businesses and non-profit organizations with increasing their use of recyclable materials in the production of finished products.
