Speaker McCall announces 2009-10 House Scholarship recipients
HARRISBURG, May 14 -- Speaker of the House Keith R. McCall, D-Carbon, today announced the winners of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year.
The winners are:
· Julie Louise Hallinan, of Altoona, daughter of Louise and Timothy Hallinan, who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh;
· Victor Paul June Jr., of Liberty, son of Tammy and Victor June, who plans to attend Kutztown University.
"In our current economic times, a college education is well beyond the budgets of some of the best and brightest students in our state," McCall said. "The House Scholarship program allows us to reward exceptional students and help them reach their educational goals.
"While there were many outstanding candidates for the scholarships, and I commend all of them, I am especially proud of the two finalists and salute them for their hard work and their thoughtful and exceptional essays."
Applicants wrote essays based on the following statement: "On January 1, 2009, Pennsylvania’s new Open Records Law took effect, bringing greater transparency to government at all levels in the Commonwealth. Openness in government is key to democracy and it is expected that the effect of the new law will be widely felt. Discuss the impact and substance of this law favoring broader public access to public records."
The scholarship grant, which can be renewed for each of the student’s four years of college, is equal to the value of one semester of tuition at a State System of Higher Education school -- $2,500 in the most recent school year -- and can be used to attend any public or private Pennsylvania college or university.
The House Scholarship Program is personally funded by current and former House members and uses no tax dollars. To find out more about the program, visit
