Goodman: Millions available to build new fire stations, renovate old stations
HARRISBURG, June 25 – State Rep. Neal P. Goodman is reminding local fire companies that the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has made available $210 million for fire departments to build new stations or renovate stations to improve response time or firefighter safety.
Goodman, D-Schuylkill, said that under the program, each volunteer fire company is eligible to receive a maximum of $15 million, with up to $5 million for each project within an application. There is no limit to the number of projects that can be included in an application, Goodman said.
Projects that are ready to begin soon after receiving the grant and those in areas with high unemployment will be given priority.
The deadline for applications is July 10, 2009.
Goodman noted that applications and guidelines are accessible from the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Web site at www.firegrantsupport.com and the U.S. Fire Administration’s Web site at www.usfa.fema.gov.
Information about state services for fire departments can be obtained through the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner's Web site at www.osfc.state.pa.us.
