Goodman seeks candidates for Valley Forge Military College scholarship
HARRISBURG, Dec. 29 -- State Rep. Neal Goodman, D-Schuylkill, is seeking applications from students in the 123rd Legislative District to participate in this year’s Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative.
One appointee will receive a minimum $12,000 annual scholarship to attend the school, which has been designated as Pennsylvania's official military college by the state House. The scholarships are fully funded by the college; no taxpayer money is used.
"This is a great opportunity to attend one of our nation's top military colleges," Goodman said. "Valley Forge Military Academy has produced Rhodes scholars, White House fellows, Grammy winners, professional athletes, and business and military leaders."
The college offers an Army ROTC Early-Commissioning Program as well as a transfer program to top-tier four-year colleges and universities throughout the country.
To qualify, a student must have a minimum overall grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the 2012 academic year and an SAT score of 1000 or ACT score of 21 or higher. Candidates should be involved in extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership ability and be service oriented.
The deadline for students to apply is Feb. 15. Goodman is not directly involved in choosing a scholarship recipient. He is assembling a selection committee to review the applications and select the most qualified candidate.
Additional information about the initiative and applications are available by contacting Goodman's Mahanoy City office at 570-773-3075, or on his website, www.pahouse.com/Goodman. Materials can also be obtained from high school counselors in the district and local Army or National Guard recruiting offices.
Completed applications should be returned to Goodman's Mahanoy City office, 39 W. Centre St.,
PO Box 66, Mahanoy City, PA 17948-0066.
Founded in 1928, Valley Forge is a co-educational, two-year transfer college located in Wayne, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia. It is one of only five early commissioning military programs in the United States.
